Wireless network speed?

I'm thinking about setting up a wireless network. If I were to get a 802.11b 11Mbps network everything within 50ft, just to give me an idea of how fast that is, how long (roughly) would it take to transfer 500 megs between two computers?

Why use the old fashioned when you can use 802.11g @ 54MBPS. Not expensive. I have a Belkin Pre 802.11n wireless router and my laptop with their PCMCIA card runs at 108MBPS.

Well my cable is capped at 3Mbps so a 108 network wouldn't do me any good...

I would agree with others that there isn't much point in going with 11b anymore as 11g is pretty much equal in price. AFA the cable thing, don't let that influence your decision too much as internet connection will generally be the bottleneck in many scenarios.
You may like the 108 (granted, real world is probably more like 45-50Mbs on average) as moving files from pc to pc will be faster.

FWIW :)

the cable only applis to interweb-to-pc transfers..pc-to-pc transfer on the same wireless network are going to be limited to the speed of the nics/AP...so i would recommend going with 802.11g at very least. personally i wouldnt bother with the superG stuff.

Under the best of conditions your only going to get about 500-600 KB file transfers with a .11b WLAN. You say "only" 50 feet. If you have multiple obstructions in that path 50 feet could be VERY significant. But let's just say you get a nice average 500KB/s. That's one megabyte every two seconds, or 30 MB a minute. Frankly I highly doubt your getting 500KB at 50 feet and wireless AP/Clients don't handle large files extremely well so I could see your 500MB file(s) taking 20 minutes or more. Your not going to transfer that much data in 5 minutes as someone posted, I can assure you of that.

Errr if that's the case then maybe I should get something faster. 500-600KB really puts it in to perspective...

my linksys wireless-b router has WEP and WPA built in. I don't care much about the speed as long as I can get it connect to internet.
