wireless network slower than non-wireless?

hi.
Well, I have a wireless connection to my computerh here. It has a linksys adapter, and is connecting from a d-link router. I was wondering if I would have a better connection if I used a cord to connect, rather than a wireless adapter. THANKS

In theory your bottleneck will be your internet connection regarding throughput, so there will be no noticable difference between your wired/wireless connections.

In practice if you use encryption and have a weak signal due to physical distance or EM interferance then you may notice some lag in throughput and/or latency. The real tradeoff is between complexity and convenience. If you don't mind tweaking your wireless network once in a while and really don't want to run CAT5 through your walls then use wireless. If you're going to be in the same place all the time and running a wire doesn't bother you, it may be less frustrating to just plug it into a router.

My suggestion is to do a speed test with your wired connection. Go to www.broadbandreports.com/stest and choose any of the 300+ servers that appear to be closest to you. If you have a cable connection you should get about 4MB/s download and 376kB/s upload speeds. If you don't, try again on a different server. Once you have a good server to use, do the same test on the wireless connection while you're right near the wireless AP. Do the same at the maximum distance you would be located to see if your good connection depletes.

I love my wireless network, but it comes at a cost of moderate maintenance and occasional dropped packets.

Good luck and have fun!
