Wireless network router?

Hey, I currently want to buy a wireless router, are there any ones that are good out there? Currently I am looking at offerings from netgear, linksys, and d-link. Also, would I be able to connect a computer directly to the wireless router with an RJ-45 cable? My setup will be computer #1 connected to router with RJ-45 and the router to the cable modem and computer #2 will be wireless.

How is wireless for downloading/surfing/and playing games btw?

Any advice is appriciated, thanks.
 
I just got a Linksys WRT54G and it seems to be perfect. I got a little confused during the setup but NetAssist (http://www.linksys.com/connect) helped me out as well as the forum members here. I am getting excellent wireless connection ~35 feet away from the router 🙂
 
be careful of version 2.2 of the linksys WRT54G router. I tried to hook up 2 in my office and had problems with transferring excel files from a wireless computer to a wired computer through the router or the other way around. The wireless connection would drop(from the router, not just a computer) and the file would not be saved or transferred. This was confirmed with 2 version 2.2 routers both purchased at bestbuy. we are now running a netgear WGR614 and have not had any problems at all.

*note* - i have version 1.0 of the WRT54G and have had NO problems at all with it and it has been running rock solid 24/7 for the past year and a half. no problems transferring excel files either. i have also set up a version 2.0 for my gf's family and they haven't had any problems either.
 
Ahh The Boss, sounds sweet, do you know if the wireless router is hybrid and can support rj 45 cable connections too ?
 
The WRT54G is a wireless router that supports the G protocol, and has 4 10/100 RJ45 ports in the back for wired use. I have mine sitting in my office on the second story of my home, and have an 80% signal strength in my living room on the first floor. I just picked mine up, so I have v2.2, and have had no problems as of yet with internet speeds, or filesharing.

I just tried tranferring some excel iles and didn't have any problems.
 
what is the G protocal? And I don't mean to hijack DVad3r's thread but is there a noticeable difference from 11mbps to 54mbps when im on a 3mbit connection(comcast)?

get the linksys wrt54g or wrt54gs if you want the faster speed. the prices on that site you linked to are VERY expensive, try www.pricegrabber.com to check prices

i picked up the netgear wgr614 last week from circuitcity for only $25 after rebates. there are some good deals out there on good routers like those you are looking at. try the hot deals thread for some.
 
I have Linksys BEFW11S4 version 4 wireless broadband B with 4 ports switch router. It is good and fast enough for me.

i think those prices are canadian dollars.
 
The prices are canadian, future shop is like best buy in the states, although we are starting to get alot of best buys opening up here too. Ok so the linksys it is then, but it says the netgear router is 108Mbps and the linksys is only 54?
 
the linksys WRT54GS is 108mbps, the WRT54G is only 54mpbs. you want the one with the S on the end for the faster speeds. you can only get the 108mbps if you have a compatable wireless card in your computer. if you only have a regular wireless g card then you only want to buy a 54mpbs router.
 
I just got the Netgear WGR614 for free (my dads a truck instructor and his student bought him one for free lol). All I need now is a wireless card. Hopefully this network is pretty good.
