Wireless network not reaching

I just recently turned a shed in my backyard into a gaming room and have ran into a little problem. The entire shed is made out of tin and only 2 very small windows. I get 3/5 bars of signal OCCASIONALLY back there, but when I try to connect it just gives me "Unable to connect" and then it won't be able to find the wireless network

The distance is less than 30-40 ft and right outside of the shed I receive a perfect 5/5 signal and it works just fine. Any ideas what to do in this situation? Thanks

either run a cable out to the shed, which if done properly can probably be hidden well. Or move your Router/access point closer to the shed. Any other types of technology would be over kill and expensive

I was just reading the outdoor CAT5 cable post and it doesn't sound like the greatest idea to run a cable underground... I've moved the router as close as possible, but it's still not reaching in the room for some reason

Not sure there is any other way unless you want to pay a lot of money for some sort of line of site wireless or fiber to put underground.. I am not sure what the other thread says but I am pretty sure if you seal the Cat5 in rubber or something it will be ok from lightening.. they do it at my work.

The problem is the tin. It acts as a shield. Mount the receiving (antenna) device for the gameroom just outside the tin wall if at all possible. Shelter it from the elements with wooden parts.

If you can't seperate the antenna (?notebook), you can use these just outside the shack and connect 4 devices to them with ethernet. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833162168 as a wireless receiver/switch with little/no setup or this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833162173 in WDS mode after setup.

Describe what devices you will use in the "gameroom" and someone can be more specific.

the router is just inside the house nearly 30 ft away from the shed. I will be running 2 notebooks and an XBOX 360 out there. I like the antenna idea, but I'm unsure of how they work and if I need to run a wire (which would defeat the whole purpose of going wireless)

Your notebook antennas are probably internal, so they cannot be placed outside. The antenna for each device would need to be outside. If JackMDS comments on this thread, take his advice.

The idea is to mount this $50 product http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833162168 on a wooden shelf on the outside of the tin shed (perhaps in a 18 inch cubic wooden box accessable from the inside) on the house side. Be sure to provide wooden shelter from the elements also. It has it's own antenna and 4 ethernet ports. Then connect to the Buffalo with wired ethernet thru a small hole in the wall of the shed for the ethernet cables. This will give wired ethernet access to the Buffalo access point mounted just outside the shed.

Your access will be wired to the Buffalo when in the gameroom, but should be as solid as if you were outside the shed with the notebooks. I would run 4 short ethernet cables from the Buffalo into the shed to connect as necessary.

The $40 Buffalo router in the above post can also use "wds mode" (1/2 speed ?)to do this, but may be more difficult to connect to your 360.

Alternately mount it inside, and put an antenna outside. Something like this cable with this antenna will do the trick, along with a small hole in the wall. Mount the antenna just under the eaves and seal/waterproof the hole after the cable is run through.

Consider positioning the Access Point (wireless adapter) in a location directly between the Residential Gateways!

I would put up a POE capable bridge (smartbridges, Tranzeo, some SOHO may work) in a rootenna enclosure and put that outside, running cat5 into a switch inside.
