Wireless N interference

If I setup a separate wireless-g WAP will that cause any slowdown or interference with my current wifi-n wap? Should I just set them to different channels?
 
Should not be any interference if the channels are different and they are not in the same room.

Ya the wifi-n is on channel 1 and up a flight of stairs. The wifi-g will be in my room which is down those flight of stairs for personal use and it will either be on channel 6 or 11 that should be ok correct?
 
not really - N can channel bond to 40mhz width to achieve more speed - like 1&6 6&11 - given interference it may have to drop down to single 20mhz channel mode like your old G-router and you will lose speed.

also there is a setting in a 2.0 N router that should make it default to jumping to 20mhz channels if there are G routers sitting in the way - you might need to turn this off.
 
Set your n router to 5GHz, assuming all your n NICs are dual band.

g is always 2.4GHz, the 5GHz band will have much less interference.
 
yeah but if you are using 40mhz wide channels you are using 2 out of 3 channels so theres not alot of wiggle room to avoid interference.

i see about 12 AP's from where i'm sitting so there really isn't an interference free zone
 
Ok so should I leave it on auto or change the freq. to 40 for my N and let the G stay at 20? If I do that there wouldn't be a decrease in range or speed with my N correct?
 
force the channel on N to 40mhz wide, Channel 1

that should make the N take up channel 1 and 6

force the G router to channel 11

give it a shot.

you could force the N to 6&11 and the G to channel 1 as well.

depends on your source of interference.

You also can't always tell the router what 2nd channel to use when in 40MHz mode. Some do it on-the-fly, some are forced to use specific channels, so can be set manually. Best you can do is perform a wireless survey from your G router and have it show which channels it finds are in use (assuming that your G router can do that).
 
Ok I set the wifi-n to 40Mhz and set it to channel 1. I set the wifi-g to channel 11. Those settings should be fine correct?
 
I don't think it's faster on that side but there seems to be quite a bit of dropped packets that would seem like there's an issue corrector would that be error packets?

unplug the G router - see if packet loss is less.

N is the biggest POS hype there is - in a lab - its brilliant - in a crowded world with WII and other legacy gear trying to shoehorn any more bandwidth in the 2.4ghz crowded space is lunacy.

5ghz always has worked decent 802.11a was far superior to b/g/n.

what i do now is run powerline ethernet to 10megabit port (max i get over it) on this workstation with a dual-band usb linksys 300mbps adapter at the same time. so most of the time the packets go out preferred route (wireless) but if that link fails (AP crashes/whatever) then it falls back to the 10megabit powerline connection.

Packet lose, Resource use, and other global variables, are very important when dealing with Big business networks but many time provide No useful leverage to End users with small peer-to-peer Home Network.

Try few scenarios of the one mentioned before and the following to evaluate Signal Strength, and do a real Local File Transfer to evaluate the real capacity of the Wireless connection.

So here is what I have planned turn on the wifi-g wap set it to channel 11 and then change my wifi-n wap to auto and see if the packet-loss will remain low with that and test throughout put and speed. Good plan?

Would I just be better off changing the wifi-n network to both a g/n network? Would the speed hit on the N side be that much as in comparison to having a separate G network with packet loss?
