Product

Has anyone seen other products like the one above. We're trying to have a server computer in our house that hosts all our mp3's. We want to connect some sort of device to a stereo downstairs that links to that server and plays the music out the stereo speakers. I think the product above could do what I am saying, but has no LCD display. I was wondering if there was a product that could accomplish what I say while displaying the song it is currently playing.

Oritron has a DVD player that streams audio and video from a PC, $250 at buy.com. There are supposed to be 1-2 similiar models coming out, there was a news item at Ars last week.

I'm still waiting for the killer home entertainment digital media center thingie.

Something that has satellite DirecTV receiver, TiVO/REPLAYTV, WiFi 802.11g, live streaming both ways, share pictures, record and play anything on the fly for under $300 with no monthly subscriptions.

I just use my ipaq 2215 and stream mp3's from my computer to it, I also stream custom encoded movies, and television via tv tuner card. I can also use terminal services to controll my desktop, or the Nevo to control my stereo/tv/home theater. Oh not to mention surf the net from the back yard witout hauling around my laptop (over kill to check the news...)

I think in the latest PopSci, there's a short blurb about a company making speakers with bluetooth MP3 playing capabilities...you put any bluetooth enabled device near enough and you can stream your MP3s directly to the speaker, which decodes and plays the file.

Weirdness.

A cheap laptop with wireless card.
and how would this be hooked up to our stereo receiver?
headphone jack. ...or line out.

ed: many also have svideo out now, so it could play divx / xvid and could play mpeg2 though you'd have to pre-copy instead of streaming realtime.

I'm looking into probably getting the Linksys one mentioned above. Displays everything on the TV... that's cool

the Linksys is better and cheaper.

Why would I get that?

Better is subjective. A friend of mine has it and I've seen the interface...pretty slick and it's VERY quick at switching songs and loading folders full of MP3s. And, it can be easily mounted in, say, an audio rack.

i tried it with 802.11b, it was just slightly too slow. 802.11g should work just fine for dvd.

Isn't it 11mbps, though? DVDs are only, what, 7-9mbps?

Better:

1) Wireless (we are not having a wired house)
2) TV display (screw that tiny green crap)
3) Cheaper (always good)

Do you really want to have to have your TV turned on to be able to pick from MP3s? The SliMP3 you can use any PC on your network and used a browser-based application.
