Wireless mouse won't move

Friend of mine just picked up a new laptop and got some kind of "Best Buy Notebook Essentials" pack along with it. This contains our problem peripheral - an RF wireless USB mini-mouse by Targus (model PAWM10). Looks kind of cheap, but I told him I'd see what I could do. On both his laptop and mine, I see the same problem - mouse is recognized as a USB HID by XP, you go through the RF sync, and you get button clicks, but no movement. The manual and the support page seem to disagree about the order of the synchronization. The manual says to reset the receiver, then the mouse - this gets the above behavior. The support page says to reset the mouse, then the receiver, at which point the mouse light should go back on - it doesn't. I get nothing at all from that method.

Any tips?

OK, that's kind of what I figured, but I was hoping I was missing something. I won't see him until tomorrow, so if anybody else out there has some secret, feel free to kick in. Thanks, guys.
