Personally don't like wireless mice for gaming or anything else either. The hassle of having to replace batteries all the time really got on my nerves. Rechargeables never seem to have the lifespan they claim, tried umpteen different ones and they all seem to become rubbish after not that many recharges. And you can't keep a spare set of charged rechargeables ready because they lose their charge while they are sitting there not being used.

Nope, thats not true at all.....
A wireless mouse that is designed for gaming is 1000% better than any wired mouse!

lol, no wireless mice sleep and needs to do things to conserve battery, usb for gaming is always on.
Ones with charger docks are mostly pointless cause you still have to run a wire, charge too much and battery eventually craps out, dont charge enough and it goes dead at the most inconvenient times.
i have 3 wireless mice, but i keep my Mamba wired but i found no matter how great the DPI is, between 2000 and 5600, it has not helped me in my games any better than an 800dpi.
actually i always had the most headshots when i used my Revo in Unreal 3. My mamba is too sensitive, its like oversteer in a car for me.

You might have just been getting the wrong wireless mice, I've never had a mouse of mine go to sleep or stop responding unless the battery died, and that was only after like a week or few of it nagging me through it's software that the batteries were getting low.
Mice batteries should never randomly die, at least not any from the past few years.

Oh and if a mouse is to sensitive you can turn down that in game settings or in the mouses software settings. :p

I've used wireless and wired mice for gaming and wireless mice tend to perform just as well as wired mice in any game I've played, IMO. :) And I've played all genres with it... >_>

Before you start playing a game though, be aware of how much juice you got left in your mouse. :)

Correct. Maybe crappy wireless mice but a gaming mouse(ie. G7) will only go to sleep after a few minutes of no movement. So while gaming, it'll never go to sleep. I've had my G7 for more than 3 years. Batteries are still fine and if you don't remember to switch batteries before you start playing, it only takes a couple of secs to swap them.

Read my above comments.

With your Mamba, you should be able to lower your sensitivity on the fly to improve your headshots. Also, it's nice to be able to raise your sensitivity when manning a tank in BC2 and other games.

Yeah it's awesome when you have someone dead in your sights and go to 'pull the trigger' and lol your battery died!

I tried once and it's just too much of a hassle with the battery. It doesn't happen very often but sometimes when I want to play a game I realized that I forgot to put it on the cradle the previous night and it's out of juice. So I connected my old wired mouse for backup, which I ended up never unplugged so I don't have to go look for it every time. And then I realized that with this setup it's kind of pointless to have a wireless mouse in the first place :)

So I got the Logitech G9 and never looked back. This is like the perfect mouse for me, having clearly designed for people with the 'claw grip'. It's not for everyone though, and people who use the 'palm grip' would be better off with the G5.

With the Mamba all you do is plug the wire from the charging dock right into your mouse if you happen to run out of juice. Goes from wireless to wired in two shakes.

all wireless mice have to shut off the laser after a period of no movement. gaming usb mice do not.
All lithium ion batteries say in every manual: Drain battery before recharging to maximise life. Constant charge decreases life span....life span varies but they gradually cannot hold 100% capacity which is not the same as charge %.
Even your car battery is supposed to be replaced every 3-5 years and thats usually heavy duty, why would you think there is infinite charge cycles?

i never siad nothing about randomly die, but faults do occurr.

I take it no one on these forums has tried using the Sidewinder X8? I can't help but look in dismay at the "wireless battery issue" comments.....Never had any issues with that.

my g7 works great, but changing battery in middle of gun fight, not so much fun.

this, sorta. Love my g7 and I never have a problem with mid-fight swaps because if the battery is half full or less I swap it out before playing anything online. Obviously any single player or non-online multi type game you can just pause and swap. It takes literally 5 seconds. Zero issues with responsiveness. When this sucker dies, I'm looking at that wireless microsoft X8.

Well I've never had any mouse of my enter sleep mode while using it whether for gaming or even just general use. If it was set to low I could see it being a major issue though.

My current mouse needs to be recharged maybe once a week or two, with it being used basically all day. For the other one I use to have, a single set of batteries was enough to last nearly a year.
Oh and is it fully drained, or just drained to the point where it says batteries are critical or whatever your mouses software says?

My first wireless mouse was the MX1000. I fell in love immediately. Amazing design, insane battery life and very accurate. From the MX1000 I moved onto the G7. Battery life was no where near as long as the MX1000 but two swappable battery packs made this a non-issue.

I now have a Mamba and couldn't be happier. The design is great and the battery life is decent enough for me. It usually lasts the entire day and I charge it over night.

DPI isn't going to make you better gamer, so anyone expecting that is buying a new mouse for the wrong reason. I prefer wireless over wired because no matter how you anchor the cord, it is still adding weight. I can't stand that weight now due to being spoiled by wireless. My girlfriend has a DeathAdder and it bugs me whenever I have to use her computer.

i got the Mamba, has some lag if it sits for more than a few seconds, takes too long to wake up. but probably as accurate as one could hope for from wireless

Stop spreading lies guy. It does not go to sleep in a few seconds. If you're gaming or using your computer and the mouse sits long enough for it to go to sleep you're either gaming wrong or typing a very long letter.

Is it a good idea to purchase a modern wireless mouse for gaming purposes? Are they just as responsive as wired mice?

Go with wired unless you plan to sit 20 feet away from your computer? :)

I've tried a billion different mice and the best for me has been the MX518.

That mamba is pretty pricey! I'll take a look at that X8 mouse though. I love my mx518 but I now use my 40in hdtv as my computer gaming screen and I'm a bit too close to the screen. I also need a wireless keyboard to complement it.

I'm still using an old Logitech MX1000 wireless laser mouse without any problems.

I would dislike using wired mice again.

I have a question about Microsoft mice. I have been avoiding them for years ever since they started adding this "Magnify" button standard, releasing mice with four buttons (with Magnify on the side as a thumb button). Now I see that they have mice with five buttons (two thumb buttons) one of which is still Magnify. Can that button be customized or is it Magnify only? Can those mice be used for gaming? These are the X000 mice (ie, MS 6000, MS 7000, etc.).

(I actually have the two thumb buttons on my current mouse set for "Copy" and "Paste" for general use, and they become weapon choice buttons for FPS or Move and Attack for Sins of a Solar Empire. I like a free program called "X-Mouse Control".)

Well I don't play competetively or anything, but I've never had any problems with my wireless mice. Used to be on a G7 and now I'm on a Razer Mamba and I really like it.

KT

razer mamba seems really nice, going to get it as my next wireless mouse

Um, wireless mice are nearly always going to be heavier due to batteries/etc. My mx1000 is pretty heavy, but I've gotten use to it. Still I suspect I have a mild handicap because of it. Sometimes I'm tempted to get a wired mouse just for gaming.

I use a MX1000 for everyday use and a G7 for gaming. The MX1000 is a tank and not very responsive for gaming. The G7 is very lite.
