My wireless keyboard owns, for gaming its just as responsive, with the RF reciever placed anywhere on my desk, just make sure you have "Keyboard Power ON" to OFF in bios, otherwise you'll run out of batteries really fast, or at least I did (1 month compared to 4+ months now

)
ALL Wireless mice i've come in contact with, explorer, logitech mouseman, logitech regular, etc... SUCK for gaming. NOT smooth in windows either, like it runs at 40hz or something, very annoying if you run at 100+ hz usually.
For wireless/corded keyboard problems in windows 2000, in games etc... make sure you're running at 100hz for ps/2. Don't ask me why, but win2k hates 200hz ps/2, and fsk's up your input stuff, ie.. making you continue to walk forward etc... for no reason! At 100hz its fine though. Logitech drivers allow you to go up to 200hz, which is part of the problem. That's why Microsoft win2k's built in mouse rate changer only goes up to 100hz (or at least thats my only logical guess, why else?)
Good luck!
