Wireless laptop charging

Not sure if this a thing or not but a while back, I thought I read something about a router or device that would allow you to charge devices like laptops just by being in range of the device without the need to plug into anything like how wifi works for internet. Is that something that will ever be a thing in the near future?

It won't be a "thing" to any sane person. The best efforts at any significant distance require massive amounts of power (inefficient waste) to charge very slowly, at great cost.

If you just mean do it like contemporary cellphone chargers, sure they could make a mat then a coil in the laptop, but it's still going to be slower and less efficient than wired alternative with that becoming more and more significant, the larger the battery is.
