wireless lan

ok my family owns 2 houses on the same piece of lan which are about 25ft apart, and we have 2 computeres in one house hooked up to a wired router, my question would a wireless lan between the two houses work, could i do it without having to make the computer thats staying in the house wireless, how stable will the wireless connection be, and what hardware would i need (recomend a card too)

If they're only 25ft apart, you could bury a Cat. 5 cable underground. That would be more reliable.

My wireless signal isn't very strong. I can't get a steady signal from inside my garage, which is about the same distance from the house as your second home is. It finds the network, but it can't hold the connection.

I would not burry a cable. Get a good wireless router and things should work great. You could setup directional antennas and all that stuff but it's probably not necessary for that distance.

mounted outside of course....and dont forget WEP, then people cant steal your internet connection by being near your house

The distance should not present a problem. However, you may also want to try and figure out how many walls the signal will have to travel through. The old rule of thumb is about 3 walls is all you can reasonably expect your wireless signal to pass through before it seriously loses strength. If you mount an antenna on the outside wall, you should have no problems, but you may also be able to get away with using an internal router w/antenna, as long as it's right inside the wall that faces the other house on the property. You will just have to give it a shot and see what happens. I have a NetGear WGT624 v2 wireless router, and it gives me a signal all over my property (about half an acre). However, it does not have the capability to use an external antenna, so if you plan on going that route, you should stick with Linksys.

do a reversed wifi lan

House 1 <-> House 2
Internet -> Wifi <-> Wifi
LAN <-> LAN

if you got more than 1 pc per house, you can either wifi the whole house or off the wifi router, run cat5 into the rooms of each house

I just moved into a new house. Without neighbors, I would have internet ;P

Burying a cable will work, but it is better for safety to use PVC pipe around to cable to reduce weathering (freeze/thaw) damage.
