Isn't that just the router itself? (what are the separate units that they sell that are called wireless access points?)

Would I be ultimately secure in using wep in addition to the mac addresses?

It's the router. They also sell standalone WAPs. I built one since I didn't want to spend money on something I could make.

There is no such thing as being secure. WEP helps, especially if you change your key every couple of weeks (or more if you don't use it all of the time).

i just got wireless, too. i love it! i can surf from the kitchen table while i eat, or stream audio to my stereo, or whatever. good stuff. i figure i'm relatively safe with WEP, MAC filtering, and no-SSID broadcast. there's unsecure networks elsewhere in my apartment complex so i doubt someone would bother with mine.

I would also not broadcast SSID (and change it from "default") in addition to using 128bit WEP and MAC id filtering.
