Linksys WRT54G router and a WUSB11 network adapter. Clear across the house. I'd say a good 60 feet away from each other. I get a "low" signal strength, but can surf the net just fine, but can't view the workgroup computers. When I had the pc in the same room with the router and got a good signal strenth I could network with them just fine.

It just seems odd that there would be enough signal to surf the net, but not connect to other computers on the network.

Anything I overlooked? (I had the WUSB11 for a while, before I bought the G router (if you were wondering))

what happens when you ping the IP address of the other computers?

hmm. fairly odd.

it pings them just fine. so then I tried using \\computername to try to get to them directly. didn't work.

so then I tried \\ipaddress

it does work from the wireless to the wired, but not from the wired to the wireless.

hmm. maybe this is good enough.... but I'd like to be a normal network.

Do an IPCONFIG on the machines in question. Do so from a command prompt. Give us each machine's IP address, each machine's gateway, & each machine's subnet. Let's start with that. :)

Oh, and since you're behind a router, at least for this testing phase, let's turn off all firewall software you might have on each box.

Question 1
What Workgroup are your computers on? They all need to be on the same one.

Question 2
Can you access the web configurator for the router? If so, see if there is a setting called Layer 2 Isolation (Common setting on Gateways). If so, disable it.

Question 3
Do you have WinXP Firewall enabled on ANY of the computers? If so, disable it. This prevents you from accessing network PCs. Useful if you use it with ICS, but pointless otherwise.

wireless box ip is 192.168.1.103
wired box is is 192.168.1.102

and both have the same subnet and gateway:
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

The are all on the same workgroup.

I don't see this anywhere. I'm using the SVEASOFT Firmware Version: Satori-4.0 v2.07.1.7sv for my Linksys WRT54G router.

well. now it doesn't work at all. curious.

I'm fairly confident this instance of it not working was due to the ip's being refreshed by DHCP. It was 192.168.1.104 and worked as that, but didn't a few hours later. Today it is 192.168.1.102 and the wireless computer will connect to \\192.168.1.102 but still not the computer name.

also the wired computer can now connect to \\192.168.1.103 (wireless) but not the computer name.
