wireless help in a dorm room

My roommate and I both got laptops this summer. We are really considering getting a wireless router, and 2 wireless cards. We'll be getting the Comcast @Home deal, and I believe that the modems that we use are 100 base-T. Basically, I want to hook the wireless router straight to the cable modem, then share the connection with my roommate. Is this sensible? We're looking to spend about $200 each. $200 on the router, and a $100 each on a card. What would be the best hardware to get at that price?

Please help me on this one.

I have a Linksys wireless AP with cable/dsl router and it has worked great. I have a couple of laptops hooked up to the wireless AP along with several boxes hooked up with wires. I got the Linksys router from buy.com for about $200. I was able to get the wireless laptop cards for about $50 each. Shop around and check out the hot deals section for any deals on linksys products. Wireless rocks, I sat outside last night and wrote some emails. Good Luck

Wow, how did you get the linksys wirless cards for $50? Thats a really hot deal.

CW (Conventional Wisdom), on variety of BBSs claims that the combination SMC Wireless Barricade, and Lucent Orinoco Wireless cards yield good communication at the Entry-Level Wireless equipment.

The Barricade can be found for less then $200 (if you find a sale or rebate). The Orinoco is more expensive then other cards (about $120).

If you plan to use the Wireless within 50? of the A/P any thing will do.

Quite recently I have seen some nice Cisco Wireless Kits on ebay for around $350-$400.00 which include a Cisco Aeronet hub (one of the best wireless gateways I think) as well as 2 802.11b compliant wireless NICs (if I remember correctly linksys did not standarize on 802.11b.. shame shame.. but I am not certain, you will want to check into this as 802.11b seems to be the standard most companies offering wireless products are aiming at.)

I've got the SMC wireless with Orinoco cards and I've never had a problem with the connection... through walls, floors, ceilings... wonderful equipment. A little on the pricey side, but then you're paying for wireless.
