Wireless crossover?

Is it possible to network two notebooks with wireless cards without an access point? Like with desktops, one may use a crossover cable to avoid using a switch/hub. Is there a 'crossover mode' per say that would allow you to do the same with 802.11b? Anyone know or am I just too cheap to buy a AP?
 
In a two workstation LAN, where the nodes are in range, Ad Hoc is a very cheap and easily accomplished alternative to an AP infrastucture enviorenment. You lose some features of the AP of course, but speedwise, they are about on par with each other.
