Wireless connection problem

I have a question for you networking people. I have a DLink 524 Wireless Router connected to my desktop and my new m6805 laptop. Recently I started gaming online again, mostly playing UT2004. The problem is I am constantly (and temporarily) losing my connection during gameplay.

What can I do to figure out what is wrong with my connection? I have already updated all drivers including the ones for the laptop. I have also heard some people mention that they don't let Windows manage connections, but I've never felt comfortable messing with the network settings. I use a 10/100 connection at work with my laptop and the wireless is for my home connection and I didn't want to muck up my existing connections.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Check your connection signal with the router and see how strong it is. If it is weak then it's possible that the two devices lose and then regain contact with each other. Another thing that may be happening is that your router may not be able to keep up with the packets and therefor is dropping the connection. I got this idea from BitTorrent problems with certain routers but I don't know if it applies in this situation.

That being said my best guess right now would to try and update the router firmware and see if that fixes the problem. If you update the firmware make sure to do it from a physical connection.

The signal strength is always excellent, since my laptop is literally just a few feet away. I also upgraded the router firmware a few weeks ago. I don't think there has been another update this quickly, but I'll check again.

BTW, any ideas on what I need to keep track of in case I didn't want Windows to manage my connections?

You would need the utility for the WiFi card in your laptop. That should come either from the laptop manufacturer or the card manufacturer.

I should smack myself in the head for missing the check box in my broadcom utility for "let this tool manage your wireless settings." Hopefully that will fix it, because for some reason I just have a tough time with the hardware side of the IT.

Thx for the link JackMDS. If the wireless utility still doesn't work I'll at least have something else to start looking at.
