Wireless Connection Issues

I'm trying to connect into my school's wireless APs. I am able to get a signal and get a valid IP address, however after that I still don't have a connection. I tried to ping my default gateway and I didn't receive any response. My school uses 802.11b and my wireless card is 802.11g (but its supposed to be compatible with b). I am able to connect to my own AP at home just fine.
Any ideas on how to get my connection to my school's wireless working??

Are you using your adapters software or xp? You need to let your adapter connect even though it's not a secure connection and xp can be fussy. Is this in the dorms? Don't your have wiring in your room?

I'm using my adapter software and network stumbler, i'm using windows 2000. And this is not in the dorms.

I tried setting up th profile using the SSID. The problem isnt in detecting the wireless network, the problems seems to occur after i get an ip from the network

You may need to go through some type of authentication. At my college, I had to login through a special authentication page before I could use the network. My card would show that I was connected and had a valid IP, but if I didn't authenticate I would not have any traffic.

As stated before check your help desk or your college's tech support web site.
