I moved in with a friend a while ago so I'm stuck with wireless internet. I'm using a Linksys router (WRT54G I think?) that's supposed to be pretty good, connected to Comcast cable. I think I have a cheap netgear wg311v3 wireless card.
When I try playing games, the quality of the connection isn't very good. It's pretty difficult to play because my latency will keep spiking and things will jump around a lot. My roommate doesn't have a problem playing on his computer (which is a wired connection through the router). Though the quality of the connection is bad, the download speeds aren't terrible. I'm downloading something off of Steam at about 600 kB/s.
Is my wireless card the suspect or is it still hard to get a good wireless connection for gaming these days? I'm kind of surprised my wireless card is getting a low signal strength despite the router being in my roommate's room just down the hall. The card is at the back of my computer which is in the corner of the room, but I think it should be better than this!
Edit: newegg reviews of this card are pretty poor... I think I'll buy a new card to see if it's the culprit. All the other wireless cards on newegg don't have great reviews either though...
