Why would it be dumb to have it in the 5x and not the 6p? (seriously these names are getting dumb :( )

Because the 6p is the premium phone, if a feature can't be implemented in a premium phone then the midrange one won't get it.
Imagine if the iphone 6s would get ois and the 6s plus wouldn't? That wouldn't make sense since the plus is the premium one.

I really like the idea of wireless charging, but in practice it isn't that great. The charge area is too small. If it were the size of a coffee table...

Are the 15W wireless chargers available yet? Charging @ 5W takes forever.

The new 6P supposedly will provide "7 hours of use in 10 minutes of charging" when charging from it's 15W USB-C charger.

If Google thought it was a gimmick Android wouldn't support it at all. They don't think mSD is a gimmick, it's just something they don't feel is necessary in Nexus devices. Likewise, they must feel that wireless charging is not necessary.

I somewhat agree with Google as well. When fast wireless charging becomes common place everywhere then I'll consider it a must have, but for now it's just a nice extra feature.
There was a bit of jest in my statement: I meant to convey that Google thinks wireless charging is unimportant, not that it's a gimmick. And the Nexus line has never been about what's just necessary or what's common place: they did, after all, implement wireless charging in three generations of Nexii, even when it's far slower than wired charging (as with the Nexus 6), and even when the vast majority would consider it to be a gimmick (3 years ago, Nexus 4).

I don't know of any 15W wireless chargers, but there are 10W solutions out there (eg Samsung Fast Charge Pad).

I have a Galaxy S6 with an Otter Box case. I also just recently purchased the Samsung Wireless charging pad. It works great, when it doesn't stop on it's own for no reason whatsoever. Also you have to place the phone on there just right for it to start charging.

While it's a great convenience and nice to not have to mess with plugging in and unplugging the charging cord on your phone every night and morning, it could use a lot of work.

It's not a gimmick, but it's not fully full proof.... just yet anyway.

But that's because you're judging based on those three things, none of which I personally consider essential. Great to have, sure, but not essential. If you consider them essential, then there are phones out there that cater to your needs. The Nexus caters to my needs better than those other phones.

Why do you not consider those things essential?

I can get by with 32GB of storage, never mind 64GB or even 128GB. I have used mSD in the past with several phones and have had issues a couple of times with them. Even though it was only a handful of times, it was enough to turn me off from mSD usage. So I no longer care about it, I get by just fine with 32GB or more of internal storage.

Wireless charging is also not essential to me. With the Note 5 I had a wireless charger by my nightstand, and one night it happened to not work, I woke up to a near dead phone in the morning. It only took that one time for me to no longer consider wireless charging essential, because it failed to work that one night.

Removable batteries have never been used much by me. I don't keep phones past 1 year anyway, so it just doesn't factor into my purchasing considerations.

I also don't have overages on my data, so I'm not worried about going past my cap (which I actually don't have right now, unlimited with T-Mobile).

Is wireless charging just really slow or was it my particularly power hungry phone? I got a 3 coil charger and always found just plugging in my s6 MUCH faster (an hour qi = insignificant, hour on usb quick charge = very close to topped off).

I'm on an iPhone now (6 until my 6s finally gets here) and much prefer lightning since I can plug it in without looking and know it'll be fully charged in the morning. I'd fumble with micro-usb by the bed without my glasses on and qi wasn't rock solid enough to depend on it (I missed wake up alarms because I kicked the nightstand or my cat jump on it enough to nudge it slightly)

It's slow, but comparing it to quick charge is just unfair. Wireless chargers seem to be a little slower than standard chargers, which are behind quick chargers already.

How exactly is that unfair? By that logic it's unfair to compare wireless charging to wired charging because they are different.

Samsung has a fast wireless charger for the Note 5. That definitely takes care of the biggest issue with wireless charging, but for me it needs to get to the point where it never fails, because it only takes one failure for me to wake up with a dead or near dead phone.

According to this article, regular wireless charging was measured at ~400 mA (above what the device itself was consuming) while Samsung's fast wireless charging was measured at ~600 mA. Wired fast charging was measured at ~1000 mA.

The Note 5 has fast wireless charging while the S6 had normal wireless charging - so the difference is much smaller. Newer chargers seem to be pretty generous on placement as well - as long as your phone is reasonably on the charger, it works.

argh, that's android for you - 6 months later and your phone's old hat and missing cool features! it's ok, my iphone 6s plus came in today and it's a beauty. I' really don't mind lightning, but I still haven't found a satisfactory dock radio, trying to mount the phone's much harder than just sticking a cable in. s6 edge going back in the mail tomorrow, kinda having a good time switching to ios throughout the apartment (apple tv on the way, apple watch for the misses for xmas, carplay in the minivan, perhaps airplay audio throughout the apartment in zones with homekit for the lights). I'm enjoying tinkering again, but on doing stuff not getting my galaxy phone to work right! the 6s plus battery life is just so much better that I feel like I can freely play with my phone all day without worrying that it'll conk out by 3 pm. Good stuff, and feels like a million bucks in your hand! To be fair the s6 edge was an impressive brick as well.

The additional coils not used to charge the phone faster just to make sure you don't have to put on the exact center of the pad.
