Wireless Cards

i'm still not sure which wireless card seems to be the best. i would LIKE one to be able to do a/g but if not g is ok. i don't care if it comes with an antenna or not bc i can jsut buy one.
this seems to be my best bet. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833127136

it is REALLY super important that the card or antenna has a lot of range with good speed. does anybody recommend a better card? i'm just a little hesitant to spend $65...but my neighbor is probably my only internet provider which is the reason i am buying this computer. please respond!

Unless your neighbor has an A router, don't worry about A support. A is mostly used in buisness environments that need the isolated band (5 Ghz)

thats the problem. i don't know what he has. i connected to his network with an a/g router but i didn't check to see if it was a or g.
ok lets pretend that he has g. what card do you recommend? i received 1-2 out of like 4 or 5 bars with a wireless laptop. i need more than that for games (even though 1 did the job...i lost the signal every few hours). what card can you recommend?

Ask your neighbor what he has. If he's offering to provide you with service, he should know what he's got.

This is the one I've got, it's great.

"thats the problem. i don't know what he has"

The inferrence here is that your leeching off your neighbors internet connection without his knowledge. If that is the case then this thread should be closed. Certainly nobody should, hopefully nobody will, help you. If that isn't the case then go ask the guy. If you have something worked out then at least your only doing cable theft, and not screwing over your neighbor.

It sounds like you aren't concerned about the price tag... the best wireless adapter out there is the Cisco a/b/g
but if you want bang for the buck, go with D-Link

The Orinoco Gold PCMCIA wireless cards are really awesome laptop adapters. You can get a PCI / PCMCIA adapter card thingy that the PCMCIA card plugs into and sticks out the back of your desktop. The Gold and Silver Orinico cards have antenna connectors on them, but don't usually come with the antenna. If you get all that together you will have a pretty good setup.

Oh, and the Orinoco Gold/Silver cards are 802.11b, which is perfectly fine for internet surfing.

why would you buy a PCMCIA PCI card, and then a pcmcia card? Why not skip the middleman and buy a PCI card? The Cisco is the same chipset/driver as their pcmcia

yea my neighbor doesn't care...and im starting to think that he has b or g because isn't a short range? i'm at least 50 ft away. maybe 150+walls. is "a" a stronger signal than b or g?

A is less prone to interference, as it's on a higher frequency, and the channels are farther apart. It's range isn't better then G as far as I can tell, but I work with it in a controlled lab. The best thing to do is get someone with a G laptop (or B, G would be better) to come run netstumbler around your house and find the best spot to setup your antenna.

.11a shorter wavelength. With like power output and receive sensitivity the range will be less, sometimes significantly depending on the obstructions. Unless your neighbor is VERY unique he either has a .11b or .11g AP. So, what was the problem with asking him again? Seems awfully suspect you haven't addressed this question with him, rather than try go round and round with a guessing game here. What's his email address? I'll see about asking him myself. Maybe instruct him on how to lock down his WLAN. 😉

is it dangerous to connect a wire to the card and put it on the roof? (obviously i would disconnect during a thunderstorm)

anything over a few feet you'll need at least LMR240. Over 15-20 feet LMR400. dollar a foot or so in bulk. more with a shorter run. Then connectors and yes if you have something on your roof you'll need to ground it and use lightening arrestors. Prices vary on that.
