Wireless card doesn't support WPA?

My girlfriend has Toshiba Satellite A20 laptop which is about maybe 4-5 years old. The card only seems to connect to the router when I enable WEP. When I change to WPA or WPA2, it cannot even detect the network type.

I thought the encryption was managed by Windows, and not by the firmware or the physical chips on the card. I guess I'm wrong?

Is there anything else I can try, I really don't want to leave it on WEP.

Encryption is handled by the card. As Jack said the cards are usually replacemable, google your model number as some have weird restrictions (some Toshibas (and other) machines are bios locked to certain wifi cards for FCC reasons)...

If you are talking about cheap PCMIA I bought Airlink+ wireless G card for less than 20.00 it does have WPA-PSK support. Nice working card.

As Jack and Bsobel have pointed out it's the hardware that needs to be compatible with the encryption scheme. This is an easy replacement and one that's dirt cheap!

When I said a "wireless card", I actually meant the integrated interface in her laptop, not a PCMIA (or whatever) card.

You can replace that as well. Or just get a pcmcia one.
