i want to get a wireless access point to hook up my xbox and such, now my wireless router isin the room across the hall so i dont want to run a ethernet cable across the hall, so my choice is an wireless acess point, soo is this how it works?'

i plug inthe access point across the hall, it wirelessly picks up my signal, i then put an ethernet cable from the acess point to the xbox, correct? or do i have to run a cable from the wireless router to the access point?

I think that you're thinking of a repeater. All an access point does is converts a wired port to wireless. The easiest thing to get is a wireless adapter for Xbox. Microsoft and Linksys sell them, among other companies. Just google "Xbox wireless adapter" :)

Make sure that you get an Access Point that can be configured as a client.

Access Point configured as a client is a Driverless Wireless card, it connects wirelessly to the Wireless Router, and can be plugged into the Game Box ( http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Modes.html ).

Access Points are usually expensive; there are Wireless Routers that can function similarly for half the price (look at the Buffalo line).

well i do have a spare wireless g router (belkin) but i called up tech support and unfortunitly this router does act as an acess point BUT it cannot do it wirelessly (like a bridge he said?)so he did say i woulda have to hook up ethernet cable acorss the hall which infacts defeats the purpose.:( thats why im weary on getting a router/acess point all in one like you said JackMDS.

like this?

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-R86-00001-Wireless-G-Xbox-Adapter/dp/B0000C5FMJ

thing is im trying to avoid spending that much, as make it more futureproof so if i do decide to get another console i could use it for that aswell.

If budget is an issue, hack a router! $40 will get you what what is basically a "wireless ethernet switch". Check out my thread here for more details:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=36&threadid=1952411&enterthread=y

Newegg has the router for $40 shipped here:

Here are the instructions for setting up the second hacked router in "bridged mode", which allows you to use it as an Ethernet switch like you want, but over the wireless network instead of a cable:

Look at the data sheet of the Belkin, some of the Belkin Wireless Routers can do client mode, if it says that it can do WDS you can probably use it as a client.

The Buffalo WHR-G54S is $30 on Buy.com with Google exit. $39.99 on NewEgg.

It is WDS as is no need to flash.

It would work in client mode with another Buffalo, Linksys, and other Routers.

With some, it might Not work.

Option 1. Hesitating forever.

Option 2. Buy the Router; return if it does not work.

Option 3. Buy a Game adaptor from the same Brand that makes your current Wireless Router.
