Wireless 56K?

Anyone know of a way to make a laptop with 56k modem wireless? Something that would replace the actual phone line, so you could go from modem -> device -> device -> phone jack?

Bought my mother a laptop and thought it would be nice to make it wireless. BTW, no broadband available in her area so 802.11x not applicable, since it seems its only used for LAN.

Grab a wireless router with a serial port like this, a serial modem, and an 802.11b card for the notebook. Set the serial modem as the WAN connection in the router setup, inputting the dialup settings. Presto! A wireless network with dialup as your WAN connection.

Option One ? The Network way.

Get a Router with a serial Port. Buy an External Serial Modem.

If you can find a Wireless Cable/DSL with a serial port you would be lucky (I do not think that there is a Wireless Router with serial port) . If you can not find one, get a Regular Router with serial port and plug an Access Point to it.

The Laptop needs a Wireless Client Card and Mom is set to surf Wireless.

Option Two ? The Telco. way.

You can get from Verizon or PCS a Wireless Telephone that can provide DialUp Internet.

You can Velcro the phone to the Laptop Plug it and the Laptop will be able to dialup.
This solution provides rather slow Internet but it works.

Be careful both options are rather costly.

Or you could get a bluetooth modem like this one and a bluetooth adapter for the laptop, but it would probably end up being almost as expensive as the 802.11b option, plus the 802.11b option allows for a broadband connection in case BB becomes available in her area in the future.

Nice find Werk.

Actually if the Laptop is already equipped with Bluetooth that might be the cheapest solution.

Note: Bluetooth covers very limited distance.

Or, Sprint offers unlimited wireless internet for laptops for $99/month. there are alos lower prices.

The Laptop card cost anywhere from $50-100, and bam, that's it. Much faster then dial-up, and she can move around anywhere there is a sprint network.

This is the option I'd go if I didn't have broadband.

Thanks for the suggestions! I didn't realize the wireless routers had serial ports. That would be the nicer option since I can go wireless with the other computers and share the modem.

Sprint wireless isn't available in her area. Nothing is! Its quite disgusting.

The Zoom modem werk suggested is Class 1 Bluetooth, so that covers 100m. I decided to go with that and a Class 1 Bluetooth adapter, from a different store. Thanks for the suggestions!

That's great. Let us know how it works out.

heh...noticed that a I was watching a SMC 7004awbr in My Ebay, so I bid (out of fustration from losing two other auctions) and won it. I guess I'll try out both solutions if I can find my external modem. Anyone want to buy the losing setup???
