wirefly upgrade disaster story.... especially important to you LTE users....

So today was my verizon upgrade date.

On tuesday on wirefly's site it said i was upgrade eligible. Now I already have a galaxy nexus, but I figured I'd just pick up another one and sell it or something since i was eligible for an upgrade. MIght as well start the clock early on my next upgrade (plus you have to use upgrades quick or you are just paying extra a month....)

So it was $230 on wirefly and would get here monday. For some reason they advertise you are upgrade eligible before you are, and just hold off on shipping until the actual day. that is a little sneaky in itself.

So anyway today I see a deal for $220 for the nexus at costco but you get a free battery. figured that was slightly better and i'd get it immediately so i go on their support chat to cancel and my order is canceled.

Anyway, lunch time i'm at costco . go there, they say my upgrade is in 18 months. so wirefly hasnt put back my upgrade. OK fine whatever. (just fyi it did go back liek 3 more hours later).

So the one stupid thing is this. I have a nexus already its LTE. so somehow by "upgrading" on wirefly and canceleing, they deactivate my nexus. now you'd think it would have deactivated when I would have gotten the new phone on monday but nooo deactivatred right away. so when i cancel it should go back... but i can't. LTE sims are only programmable one time. So now i've wasted hours on this and need a new SIM according to verizon tech support which at least is free. but i'm at work now so no phone service until after work

Also wirefly's tech support doesn't have any voice operators at all. its all automated and they force you to chat with some random guy probably in india or something online who just repeats "i'm very sorry i understand your situation" like 500 times during the chat. like it must be a hotkey macro.

So yeah lesson learned. WIREFLY sucks.

Or you could simply not try to work the system for a quick buck. Just sayin'. 😛

well its not really working the system. i was eligible for my upgrade.

I mean the same thing could happen to anyone who say bought a tbolt when i did, and had an upgrade now (i had a 1 year contract )

But you can hold your upgrade as long you wish, if I'm not mistaken. And you don't pay any more or less with Verizon for being out of contract. Only reason to burn the upgrade now was for profit.

And all that hassle so he could make $10 more.

i don't get why i'm getting so much hate for trying to save money.

i mean i did it mostly because i got the phone today instead of next week

also in my defense it was $10, a car / home charger, and a free extended battery. i thought it was worthwhile, and it would have been hassle free had wirefly not screwed up canceling an order that had not even shipped yet. i did go back later on to costco after clearing it all up and got all of that stuff so though there was the earlier hassle i think it was worthwhile having already sunk an hour into it.

i really dont get it, i'm assumign this is why everyone in america is broke because somehow it is bad and worthy of ridicule because someone tried to save $50?

also to the guy who said you can hold your upgrade forever. that is true, but the poiint is you are effectively losing money every day you dont use it.

i mean upgrades are 20 months apart. you get about a $350 subsidy which obviously is taken out of the money you pay every month. so effectively you are paying $17 a month for your subsidy if you use it right away. if you wait 30 months , obviously you have paid an extra $170 (assuming the subsidy is worth ~$17 a month) for no reason at all.

yet i'm the one being called stupid for burning an upgrade as soon as possible instead of "saving it" . by the brilliant logic of the commenters here had i "saved" my upgrade until say i dont know this summer to buy whatever phone is out then i'd have been better off, though i'd have effectively given verizon say 7-8 more months worth of $17 a month.

i suppose this is why people are so fond of contract pricing on phones and the "cheap" price up front because no one actually understands math or how phone companies charge you for your upfront discount.

i suppose i just dont like wasting money. i make plenty of it , but i dont see any reason why i should not get the best deal for phone service / phones
