Winzip and RAR

I play NWN, and the modules that people post for download are mostly in RAR format now. I have winzip that came with my PC and I like it cause it automaticaly unzips everything that is in a zipped file. I dont have to manualy unzip anyhting which for me is confusing.

So my question is, can I install a program like Winrar without having to uninstall winzip, and will winrar conflict with winzip? I dont want anything to mess up winzips default settings as a default zip/unzip tool on my PC. Thanks

The good thing about WinRAR is it supports RAR, ZIP, and a host of other compression formats...whereas Winzip is somewhat limited in the formats it supports. However, there should be no problem having both on the same system.

You can certainly use WinRAR as a replacement for Winzip. But if you don't want to, then you can setup WR so it's not associated with ZIP files. That way, you can still use Winzip as you want, but WR is there when you need to uncompress a format not supported by WZ.

Oh thankyou Blueweasel. However, I think I just learned that I have windows zipper that came with my computer. I cant find winzip anywere on my pc, (I thought I had winzip but I guess not) so I imagine its Windows zipper. BTW, Where could I find this Winrar? I seen so many diferent downloads for this, so not sure which one to grab, and is it free? Thanks again!

7-Zip is excellent freeware that supports many compression formats...including ZIP and RAR

WinRAR (the original) isn't free and I don't think the trial version ever runs out....the nag screen remains, though.

Hey sourceninja, I checked out Tugzips page and it looks like a good program and good forum too. When you download it, does it give you an option to set things the way you want them? Like I mentioned in my post, I dont want my windows zipper to be lost, and want to leave that as my default. Thanks

I also am looking at 7 zip also, so I am debating between the two now. The winrar I downloaded and has a 40 day trial which I guess I have to pay after that, so I didnt install it yet.
