As soon as I discovered WinRar(7/8 years ago) I dropped WinZip like a bad habit.

Tried Power Archiver?

For all the WinRAR fanboys, how is WinRAR be better than either of these?

I don't think I'm a WinRAR fanboy (if such people do exist), but I'll answer your question anyways. I've always had problems manually extracting self-extracting exe files with other compression programs. Sometimes they would incorrectly identify an exe as a self-extracting file or sometimes it wouldn't detect it at all. WinRAR has always worked well for me. On top of that, it's fast and simple without a billion extra confusing features.

I just downloaded and tried PowerArchiver. For the most part its a copy of WinZip except when it comes to performance.

I tried opening a 200+MB file in both WinZip and PowerArchiver using file open option in both.

WinZip time: 4 seconds
PowerArchiver: 10 seconds

You are out of luck.

I have a registered version of WinZip 6.3. I have upgraded up to WinZip 9.0 which recognized that I have a registered version with no problem. WinZip 10.0 does NOT recognize previous registered versions and requires all users to buy a new license. I verified this from WinZip's web site:

WinZip 10.0 Upgrade Information

Note: if you are a registered user of a previous version of WinZip and install WinZip 10.0, WinZip 10.0 will not be a registered version.

It is back to WinZip 9.0 for me.

WinZip 10.0 Standard Single-User License $29.95 (Pro costs $50!)
Add a year of Upgrade Assurance for an additional $6.95

It is a bit expensive, especially when the functionality is buit into the OS and there are free tool. Also looking at the "Upgrade Assurance", new versions of WinZip are not going to be free either. Current registered users can get the new version for $15.00, however I will stick with v9.

Vista needs to come with built in support for every major compression scheme out there. Zip support was a good first step, but let's get going, MS.

I haven't used WinZip since I started using XP.

Vista needs to come with built in support for every major compression scheme out there.
If that happened there'd be anti-trust lawsuits galore.

I wonder what happened to free.
