WInXP won't load

When I boot up my computer, I get an error saying that the following file is corrupt or missing. This happens before the XP splash screen. \Windows\System32\config\system

Is there any way to fix this? I tried loading into knoppix and can verify that the file is not missing.

Thanks in advance.

Boot from your Windows XP CD, choose to install Windows to the existing partition where XP is now, then choose to repair the existing installation.

The above Microsoft link is great. Just be sure to make some batch files to make it easier.

But before you go to all that trouble, boot to the recovery console and run a CHKDSK /F /R
This may take a while, but I have had it fix your exact problem and it may even repair the cause of the problem. If this doesn't work then go through the MS steps listed in the link above. One of the two should get you up and running.
