WinXP woes

I usually leave my comp on when not there (running downloads and whatnot), and lock it to prevent the less computer literate members of my family to mess something up. There's still the guest account that has no password, so they can check their mail and whatnot from there if necessary.

Lately, after signing out of the guest account to get back into my own, my computer seems to hang. The screen goes black, and the monitor's light starts flashing. I can't do anything except reboot. Tried entering my password in hopes that it's just a display error, but to no avail. However, the HDD light keeps flashing, as if the downloads were still running and the comp was writing the data to the disk.

Also, and I don't know if this is related, last time I rebooted from this freeze, the GUI took very long to start up, and a lot of things didn't show up in the system tray. The next day when I turned on the comp, I got a BSOD shortly after logging in (it said something about winsys32k.dll I think). Rebooted, and everything's been working fine since then.

Anyone have any idea what this means/how it can be fixed?

Run memtest to check your memory integrity.

Also, get the manufacturers' diagnostic software for your hard drive(s) and test their integrity.

P. S. - Make sure your P/S is sufficient for your hardware & check to make sure your temperatures are within reasonable parameters.

Good luck.

Ran memtest for about 45 mins, passed twice with no errors. I can't find any diagnostics on Samsung's site... actually there's one, but it says it "might" erase all my data, so I'm a bit reluctant to use it. Is there any risk-free app to do the job?

PSU has two 12A 12V rails, and my temps are well within limits.

Programming Issues

Both fast user switching and remote desktop use Windows XP's updated terminal services technology. Improvements have been made to both the server and client components of terminal services. Windows XP now features support for both local and remote sound, 24-bit video, performance optimizations, and the mapping of the local drives and printers.

Might this be the cause?

I'm not sure what you mean... though if that's any hint, the Guest account may not have 32-bit display set in the monitor settings. Also, Guest uses the regular WinXP interface while my own account uses Classic mode.
