WinXP w/ SP1: Security Updates Fail To Install. Why?

Been having this problem since September 2004. Every individual security update I try to install fails (KB840987 through KB891711). However, any other update, including cumulative security updates, install just fine. I assume that this is not related to a network/firewall issue.

Here is a sample of the output from the WindowsUpdate.log reflecting the failed installation. The error code doesn't offer much help:

owsUpdate Failure Content Install Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070005: Security Update for Windows XP (KB888113).

I have tried disabling all unnecessary background tasks when attempting this. And there is nothing in the MS knowledge base regarding this problem that I can find. I have avoided moving to SP2, but I suspect this might solve this particular problem.

Any ideas??

That error code means access denied (for whats thats worth). Only thing I can think of is to run filemon and regmon from Sysinternals (or turn on auditing) to help determine what exactly is causing the access deined error.

I've run both of these utilities, but I do not have enough experience reading them to be able to sort out what is the real error. The amount of information is incredible. Anything in particular I should be looking for?
