hey guys, just wondering if installing xp by upgrading over an existing version of 98se will keep all programs and data 100% intact.

I would especially like to keep the registry settings unchanged. does anyone have experience with this?

No, not 100% Yes, it will keep programs and data intact, but only to a point. You have to be careful though, upgrading 98se -> xp is a messy upgrade. Some software doesn't port over well, and I know I had some issues with my network card. (I did an ME-> XP upgrade). Best to back your data up and start fresh if at all possible.

On a system that is not having any problems with the existing 98/me install, the upgrades I've done have gone relatively smooth. If you stick the XP disk in and run the compatibility test, you'll see what programs or hardware will give you possible issues. You can also run this compatibility test on the MS site somewhere....I found it here.

HCL xp upgrade

It going to be slightly different when you get done, but most things work the way they did before the upgrade. Be prepared with XP drivers for all your devices, so in case you do have network card or modem issues, you already have it.

If you check for compatibility using your CD and HEED THE WARNINGS it gives you it should be pretty painless. Always uninstall antivirus and CD Burning software prior to the upgrade then reinstall (with XP versions) afterwards.
