Officially Microsoft hasn't stated if RC1 will need to be uninstalled before installing the final release.

Probably not. MS typically does a good job supporting RC-to-gold updates on all their products.

With the huge number if RC1 installations out there, they'd be crucifying themselves if they didn't permit an upgrade to Gold.

As of now, I see no reason to even go "Gold." RC1 is darn near perfect on my three systems. I plan to just leave it there and see if it wants to upgrade itself. :)

That's kind of the idea behind a "Release Candidate"; all the features are present and they are just looking for issues/bugs to iron out before doing the final release.

Also part of the reason to give it time like this is to let vendors/organizations test their software and ensure it will work with SP2.
In my process of testing SP2 I know now that the Cisco VPN client v. 3 doesnt work anymore. However version 4 does. Now I have enough time to update all my software images and help to upgrade some of our users and when it is release it shouldnt be much of an issue because we'll be running the new client everywhere.

Thanks.
Is it fairly easy to uninstall this build and install final (when it comes out)?

Yeah it should be, it just takes a small bit of time (30 minutes at most). Just dont run programs in the background, restart afterwards when it says. Boot into windows, then install final.
