Hey guys...

For those of you that use windows XP ... have you noticed that it is slower than your previous operating system?

I used to use w2k, switched to XP w/ sp2 about 2 months ago.

My system seems to be bogged down quite a bit.

For ex: i run diablo II and when i switched to my desktop to a previously opened web page it would take about 1 sec to switch, with a blank page, then another second to show the page material ( you could see it appearing from top to bottom of the page slowly like it was my old 500mhz k6)

I did not have this problem with it in w2k. I was advised by some people to add more memory (512mb currently) but the system says i barely use any.

So i'm wondering what it is that is slowing my system down.
I've disabled dhcp and some other start up already. Boots up faster, but i really notice that it's slower even opening microsoft word and such.
Is there something wrong that i overlooked?

system spec:
WindowsXP sp2
athlon64 2800+ @ ~2300 stock hs/f(problem apparent at stock also)
chaintech VNF3 250
Corsair VS 512mb pc3200
sblive plat
geforce2
onboard lan
ati pci tv

programs running : Norton system works 04 (odd thing- during bootup i see an X over the icon ... never noticed it before in my other os )
aim

thanks guys ... i appreciate your imputs.

You have a very powerful computer;
I really am surprise you notice any slow down at all.

Having said that XP-SP2 is quite big and bloated.
With some minor service and Reg Tweaks, you can SPEED XP QUITE A BIT

Overall, XP w/o Tweak is slowe > W2K,
but XP w/TWEAK is much faste than W2K w/Tweak.

Another trick I've used on my PII-366 laptop running XP-SP2
is to cancel the "THEME" Service - which effectively makes your
XP look just like a W2K.

Something is definitely not right. While SP2 may result in a slight (1-2 percent) performance hit, the difference should not be noticeable on your hardware. XP has always felt faster than 2000 in my experience. Here are some things to check.

1. In Device Manager, find your IDE/SATA controllers and ensure that your hard drive is running in DMA mode.
2. Do you have the latest drivers installed for your chipset, video card, network card and sound card?
3. Can you run HijackThis and post your log?

I have also experienced performance issues with just having Norton Antivirus installed and running. I second that.

You can also see if you have that execution protection bit turned on that XP SP2 supports. I don't think it would cause the slowdown though. I agree with the "remove Norton, smack it's backside and kick it to the curb" sentiment.

I also think it has some relation to Norton as I have seen Norton products causing things such as this.

I did some tweaks i saw on tweakxp.com - still slower
I already took off the theme any everything (but why should i if i have a processor 2x faster than with my w2k?)

-Checked both and they are all up to date and dma is checked in device manager and according to sisoftsandra

Norton system works 04
^ its that, delete it and report back
- That would be great, but i had NSW04 on w2k also

Maybe i'll reinstall the drivers all over again ... some of them might not have erased or something.
If anyone can come up with a reason why it's so slow ... i'd like to know

thanks for the replies guys.

ah man this is getting annoying.. with so much processor power i feel like i'm running a 450mhz pc.

Is it normal for cpu usage to show 40-80% when i open a folder? it's only for a second and goes to zero again, but i think that could be the reason.

I don't know what is wrong... anyone have a link to tweak some more options on xp i would appreciate it.

Takes over a second to open ms word ... *sigh*

thanks in advance

As far as Explorer.exe goes I'll let you figure it out for yourself.

Dont delete it. Just go to the task manager and shut it down. DONT CLOSE TASK MANAGER!
Notice anything?

When you are done, click on FILE..Run.... type in EXPLORER.EXE and click OK.

This may seem simple, but its a great way to clean out all kinds of crap and help your system along after two weeks of uptime.

BTW: I only have 19 processes running under XP Pro and one of them is mine, not Windows. Razer mouse program (lets me have different X and Y speeds.)

I would reccomend you look at: tlab404.com.
http://v2.tlab404.com/articles...?iFaq=300&iType=15

The guide for tweaking a game machine is a good place to START. I have seen most XP and 2K installations have lots of junk running by default. My system works just fine with these tweaks.
