I upgraded to SP1. I usually do a clean install but my XP has been running fine since last year. I however did experience a tad bit of slowdown which were gone after SP1 upgrade.

Format sounds like a good idea for you Shagga and I think its already beginning to work out. Upgrading in the long term sucks because when you initially install an o/s, it installs files where it can access them the fastest. The o/s files are files that cannot be moved, not by defragging, not by anything except reformatting. So each time you upgrade.. the files get moved and you can experience small slowdowns from .001 seconds to 15 seconds.

Hope it works out for you. :)

My SP1 update went very well, even tho I Ghost'ed the partition first, just in case.

I had to reboot it a couple times (wierd error messages) and reset my internet ip, but since then its apparently been perfect.

The one thing I notice that is improved, is that right-clicking on a file or drive, the popup context menu appears faster.

The only problem I see now is that IE6.0 doesn't load all the images in my browser now and I have to manually right-click -> show picture

This is a semi-common one. Search the forums here and at Ars and Hard. This has been asked and answered several times. All you need to do is check/unckeck a few boxes in Internet Options and you'll be fine. I was having that problem and I followed the directions and IE is working as well as it ever does for me. (I use Opera, it's way faster, easier to use and more secure than IE)

All seems stable at the moment, since the re-installation that is. So hopefully everything has settled down a bit. Thanks for the suggestions. In fact I bought a Gainward GeForce Ti4600 750 XP Golden Sample to cheer myself up..Shhhh.....Don't tell the wife... I don't know if it will but wth. It should arrive either tomorrow (today even) or Thursday... :)
