WinXP Pro FTP Support...

I was very surprised and pleased to find that Windows XP had built-in support for hosting an FTP.

This makes it simple to send an HTML link to my files through email or messaging programs. However, I couldn't figure out how to configure users, passwords, or permissions for different directories. I can allow uploading to my FTP, but that would allow anyone to delete or replace any file in any directory.

Are these features stripped out because M$ hasn't made an 'Advanced Server' version of WinXP yet?

1. Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>Add/Remove Windows Components>Internet Information Services (IIS)>File Transfer (FTP) Service

2. Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Internet Information Services>COMPUTER-NAME>FTP Sites>My FTP>Properties

As far as I'm aware. Until the .NET OSes are released, (aka WinXP Server) people with serving needs were to stick with Win2K Advanced Server.

Anyway, I'd use something like serv-u (or whatever) for your ftp serving needs anyway, IIS seems to always be cropping up with more and more vulnerabilities.

I'd stay away from IIS.

like previously mentioned, Serv-U works decent, you can set all the permissons (by user and directory) etc.

Hasn't a neutered version of IIS come with all windows versions since windows95?
