I have a problem on a pc here, when i open the network connections folder it is empty even though i have installed a dialup connection and a lan connection. when i refresh it tells me: "The Network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the network connections service is enabled and running." the first time it booted everything was fine, i set up the internet and network and it worked. it worked when i left. when i came back the other day, it didn't work. the pc had been restarted. i troubled a lot and then reinstalled it xp and got it to work. but after a restart it was back to the same!? what is this, it's an old compaq pc 600mhz p3 i think. maybe the bios, but i can't seem to find any bios upgrades for this pc! heeeeeelp.

Can you list the protocols you have installed for your LAN? It should have File and Printer Sharing, TCP/IP, Client for Microsoft Networks, NWLink NETBIOS. I don't know why you would need the last one, but I found that I needed it for my network neighborhood to show the PCs connected to the LAN. Hope this helps.

I'll ask the obvious question since you didn't state specifically whether or not you did this. Did you go into the Services applet under Administrative Tools (If you don't find Administrative Tools in your Programs menu you should be able to find it in the Control Panel.) and check to see if this service (Network Connections Service) was running? It does have to be running. If it isn't running you need to find out why. A lot of people try to "tweak" their systems by turning of services of various kinds. A reinstallation of the OS should have fixed this -- IF the reinstall was a clean one. But, if you only did a repair install, the installation retains the settings (including the ill-advised ones) of the previous installation.

Another possibility is that there is something (a driver probably) on your system that prevents the Network Connections Service from starting. You should check your Device Manager to see if any hardware / devices are listed as being compromised, and you should check your Event Viewer's Applications log and System log for error messages that might pertain to this problem.

Let us know what you learn. Someone will probably be able to help you.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure that I understand what you're indicating here.

Is the Network Connections Service set to start automatically or manually? (I think manually is the default.)

Did you look in the Event Viewer for error messages in the System or Applications logs?

disabling isdn adapter, network interface card (nic) and firewire IEEE something.
that's the adapters under "network" in system. i've tried the service. it won't even start.

will check the event viewer though. that may be helpful. thanks for the tip ;)
