WinXP lagging out

Ok I just formatted 3 weeks ago. Starting yesterday my system keeps lagging out. A couple of times I waited it out, but the other two times I just rebooted after waiting literally 5 minutes for whatever I clicked on to open when it froze up. I can move my mouse pointer and that's it. Everywhere above the taskbar I get the hour glass.

This has never happened before, though I've had some other problems in the past. I know this will definitely be the last Intel based system I have for a while. My old AMD setup never skipped a beat.

Help?

My primary suspects are virus/spyware or misbehaving application. Likely nothing to do with the hardware.

What Dan said. See if the behavior happens in safe mode as well. While you are there use a system restore point.

Turns out I had a boatload of spyware registry keys and malware on here. I don't know how that happened, unless my mother did something. I'm pretty sure all she has done is check her Yahoo mail. The only other thing I can think of is I went to a few of those warez crack sites recently, but I always clicked No in the "Do you want to install and run xxxx" boxes.

Oh well. It hasn't lagged since I removed the spyware, but that's only been a few hours ago.
