I installed XP pro last week and ever since my computer has been rebooting on its own. Sometimes it won't do it for 2 or 3 days, other times it will reboot 2 or 3 times a day. Most of the time the system would come right back up, but a couple of times it will give me an error right before the XP splash screen saying that the file C:\windows\system32\drivers\ntfs.sys was missing or corrupted. I could replace the file and get back in, but that was really annoying me so I went back to win2k.

When I was trying to reinstall win2k last night, I couldn't from the CD because it would stop about halfway through copying the files and tell me that each file beyond that point could not found. There is nothing wrong with the CD itself and the drive I was using is able to read numerous other disks without a problem.

My computer specs are:
Athlon 1.33 Thunderbird
Abit KG7-RAID w/ BIOS version 4J
1GB Crucial PC2100 DDR
(2) 80GB Maxtor 7200rpm
Leadtek GeForce2 Pro 64MB
Audigy Platinum
Pioneer slot load DVD
Plextor 24x10x40a

The NT-based OSes reboot for two reasons: hardware faults, or a blue screen (driver faults).

I'll bet my next paycheck you're getting a blue screen. Go to control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery, and uncheck the automatically reboot checkbox. Then get the hex numbers from the blue screen.

Copy and paste the entire error message into Google. You will likely find more info on that error. I did it on an XP error and found another article with the exact same problem I was having. It didn't fix my problem but now I'm not so lonely.......hehehe

Your most likely having a hardware problem if even the setup can not complete. Bad harddrive cable, bad memory, overheating (you overclocked?).
