winXP is taking 20 minutes to boot up....

So as of today my pos OS is taking a decidedly long time to boot. i think the thing that did it was when i tried installing the usb drivers for my new sony ericsson k790a cellphone, and then it hung while adding new hardware. or maybe not. but, yes, windows is taking 20 minutes to boot up. it'll boot to the desktop, show the wallpaper and nothing else, and then everything (startbar, icons, programs, etc) will load a mere 20 minutes later. and ideas on how to remedy this? i was thinking that maybe my hdd drive was relegated to PIO mode for some reason, but it's still in udma according to the bios. i haven't any other ideas. besides trying to boot last known good configuration. that didn't work either. any ideas?

check your start menu, some app is not able to locate what it needs to start up. Strip each app one by one and you will eventually find the culprit
 
The likely suspect is the one that you mentioned...the cellphone. Remove the driver, uninstall it from the Device Manager, and see what happens. If there is no improvement, then go to the startup tab in msconfig and unselect everything and see what happens. If the problem disappears, then reenable only one item at a time, until you find the one causing the problem, and deal with it individually.
 
You should be able to do a system restore---if you have a restore point prior to your ill fated cell phone install.--but that may assume your OS is win xp.
 
removing all items from the startup tab in msconfig didn't help, and i don't believe the driver for the cellphone was ever installed. in hung while it was searching for the driver to be installed. i'm not very convinced that the cellphone has very much if anything to do with the problem. a system restore to last sunday (when everything was fine and dandy) did not help either. however, while searching around the internet i came across a similar problem on another forum: http://ausforum.com/printthread.php?t=25049&pp=40
it turns out the problem was a corrupt log file, and he pretty much solved it by reinstalling windows. can anyone think of a cleaner way to fix it?

anyhow, problems gone just as quickly as it arrived. don't know why. what i did was plug in the phone and it started searching for drivers again (even if i specify the folder to look in, it'll still search for hours looking for the drivers, until i click 'cancel' and then it'll freeze). so i clicked cancel, end tasked explorer and restart the computer. and now it's working again.

and now to try installing the phone again......

edit: installation went smooth this time around. odd. but good.
