WinXP is putting wierd files in the c:\

I've installed Windows XP several times, and I've never seen this before.

Every time I boot, the OS seems to be writing 2 files to the c:\ drive, Pollog.txt and PoleSt.txt, which contain the following type of information:

What are these? Why have I not seen them before? How do I stop this from re-occuring each time I boot up?

Pollog.txt
------------
08:29:07:953-0x0000051c...Loading instance 0x400000, ThreadID = 0x51c

PollST.txt
-----------
-03:13:35:515-0x000006fc...Calling StartServiceCtrlDispatcher()
-03:13:35:515-0x00000700...Entering CNTService::ServiceMain()
-03:13:35:515-0x00000700...Entering CNTService::Initialize()
-03:13:35:515-0x00000700...CNTService::SetStatus(1332360, 2)
-03:13:35:531-0x00000700...CNTService::SetStatus(1332360, 4)
-03:13:35:546-0x00000700...Leaving CNTService::Initialize()
-04:03:25:218-0x000006f4...Calling StartServiceCtrlDispatcher()
-04:03:25:218-0x000006f8...Entering CNTService::ServiceMain()
-04:03:25:218-0x000006f8...Entering CNTService::Initialize()
-04:03:25:218-0x000006f8...CNTService::SetStatus(1332360, 2)
-04:03:25:234-0x000006f8...CNTService::SetStatus(1332360, 4)
-04:03:25:234-0x000006f8...Leaving CNTService::Initialize()

From a newsgroup post it appears these files are from the Catalyst drivers, not XP... You running an ATI videocard?

Yes, as a matter of fact, I am. Radeon 9800 Pro with Cat 3.4's. Just got the card too, so that'd explain it. I really hate it when software writes stuff to the root folder of my main drive.

Thanks for the heads up. That certainly explains it. Now if I can just find a way to disable it. 🙂

ATI confirmed this (in the above thread that MyName posted) as a bug, will be fixed in the next release. I haven't tried it, but someone asked if you could make the files read only so the sw wouldn't update them. Then mark them hidden, atleast they won't be obviously there until the next cat release.
