WinXP Install Problem: Install keeps starting from the beginning after every reboot

I'm trying to install Windows XP Professional on a new system with a new hard drive. My WinXP cd boots fine, but after I have Windows format my drive and it starts installing files, it says it's going to reboot and then continue with the install. The problem is that when it reboots, it goes back to the beginning again and wants to format my drive again. How can I get Windows XP to continue with the installation at this point?

TIA,

Sal

After the first reboot, go into your BIOS setup and change your boot order so that your CD-ROM drive is listed after your hard drive.

I went into my BIOS after the first reboot and just selected my hard disc to boot from and removed the XP cd and I got a "can't find system disc" error.

I'll try putting my hard drive ahead of the cd rom in the BIOS after the first boot and see what happens. I don't know what the difference is from what I'm trying to do though.

This is weird because I don't remember ever having this problem. I've installed XP a few times now too.

Thanks again.

Uh, don't you have to leave the XP CD in? Try setting the hard drive to first boot and leave the CD in. If it does it again I'd be looking at my hard drive cable & hard drive.

I'll have to look at my hard drive because no matter what order I have the system boot in, it still starts from the beginning after each reboot. I do have to leave the cd in too because it asks for it on the reboot.

Is there a way that I can check out the hard drive to make sure that it's working properly besides checking cables?

I can't see that it's the hard drive though because the Windows XP cd sees the hard drive and can partition and format it. Why won't it continue with the install then? Weird..

Thanks again!

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! Buckmasterson, you were right. Sure enough, I switched IDE cables to my hard drive and Windows continued the install. I must have a bad IDE cable. I guess it's going to be hit or miss with the cheap round cables from SVC. 😉
