WinXP initial install cyclic redundancy error

I just put together a new system and WinXP Pro doesn't seem to want to install. I checked the Microsoft website and it said to replace the hard drive which I did. I got a new one today and it's doing the same thing. Some system info:

A8N-SLI Deluxe
Athlon 64 3500+
1G OCZ Platinum Rev 2
NEC 3520A DVD RW
Western Digital 74G Raptor

Error: SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy file "D:\I386\asms\6000\WINDOWS\COMMON\CONTROLS\CONTROLS.MAN

Error: Installation Failed: D:\I386\asms.

Error message: Data error (Cyclic redundancy check)

Everything I'm using is brand new, including the WinXP Pro disk. I searched this forum and one other guy had a problem but it was on existing machines which wouldn't help me.

This is my first attempt at building a computer and I'm really stumped. Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.
 
I'm in a hurry (sorry), but a "cyclic redundancy error" sounds like a CD-ROM problem to me. Google has some information regarding this 🙂

Since it's a new system, I'd have to guess that the CD drive is faulty. Still under RMA?

It's weird though because it goes through the copying process just fine. It doesn't hag up until it starts the actual install.

I'm new to this stuff so I'll try just about anything.
 
Did you f6 and install Sata drivers? I've had that error before, and for me the problem seems to be a faulty chip on my mobo, though mine is a msi neo2 plat. After I got it to stop booting the windows install, I started getting an "error loading operating system" message right after post. I would say its either a problem with your sata controller or just the drivers. Maybe look at the Asus tech support?
 
The SATA drivers are already there. The manual says that they SATA connections are set up to SATA by default. I can make a BIOS change to make it a RAID but I only have 1 hard drive so I'm not going to mess with that.

I don't have another CD/DVD drive to swap in right now but planned on getting one anyway so I'll try that tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks for the input so far everyone.
 
move your nec 3520a drive from the primary ide socket to the secondary ide socket

it sounds like it shouldn't make any difference but it solved a similar problem I had installing XP on an ASUS K8V recently.

 
Swapping to the secondary IDE channel didn't help. I went and bought a new DVD-ROM today and got XP installed. I tried loading drivers and stuff with the 3520 and it worked for awhile but cut out in the middle of some installation programs. I switched over to the DVD-ROM and it worked like a champ. I'm RMAing the 3520 tomorrow. I hope the replacement works better than the first one did.
