I just did a clean install of WinXP home upgrade version on my wifes' machine and Windows setup never asked for a "qualifying" full version CD of Win98/me. I partitioned and formatted the HDD so there was nothing left on it. Had disk in hand, but never got asked for it..Weird. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this happen?

If you repartitioned and formatted the HD during the same installation session (by booting from the WinXP setup CD), then the installation procedure is smart enough to "remember" that it "saw" a qualifying OS on the HD before formatting. (I suspect that it sets a telltale bit in the MBR during the partitioning process.) This is the way I did my upgrades, and I was never asked for a CD. But there was a farkled system on which I used a Win98 startup CD to delete partitions and do a full format just to get rid of the fouled up file system and to test the drive. A WinXP clean install on that machine required me to insert the qualifying OS setup CD.
