Norton is up to date... but I remember it not workin so great, think it had a conflict with something

Spybot works great and up to date, zonealarm was going good too
1) what version is the dasm Norton :frown: and did you configure it like I showed (max out all settings including heuristics and compressed-file scanning)?

2) you got all your defenses in place before plugging the network cable in on your raw WinXP installation, I hope? Otherwise we're going to be going in circles here.

3) Start > Run > gpedit.msc and go down to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System. Tell it to Don't run specified Windows applications and name Helpctr.exe and see if that helps supress it.

4) download and follow the instructions in this file to the letter.

Could this be the cause?

I read helpctr.exe can set off a norton alert.... maybe I set it to be blocked and now it's angry...

I'm getting blocked by "help" popups... don't mean helpctr.exe, this is another thing... like the help associated with the question mark in the upper right corner.

Any way to turn that off?

Try installing SP2 before you connect to the internet next time...
