So I came home yesterday, to find my computer turned off(I keep it on all the time). I restart it and it says that Windows cannot boot because one of the system files is missing and to insert the setup disk and press "r". So I followed the instructions but it still did not work. Then a friend told me to reinstall windows xp and it will fix the problems and keep all my old files and settings. I reinstall windows.

However, it set up a whole new account and I am unable to access my old account anymore. So Windows XP boots up, but I cannot access my old programs anymore. I know that my old account still exists, because I saw the folder for it on My Computer, under My Documents.

Does anyone know, how I can access my old account, settings, programs? Or is there a way to uninstall the new windows? Please help.

Oh and I have winxp professional. I don't know if that will help, but thank you.

When you reinstall WinXP over an existing copy it installs on top of the old one. Your folder may still be there but the original install is gone. This used to work for Win98 but not NT and up. To get to your old profile you need to take ownership of the folder. Just do a search in Help for ownership and you should find it.

I read the help on taking ownership, but whenever I right-click the folder, I do not see the security tab. Is there another way, I can take ownership?

You have to diable simple file sharing from the folder options. If you have already done this, than you're going to have a tough time getting what you need back out of there, though it will be possible.

Psych,

I was able to get ownership, but it did not restore my system settings. Is there a way I can get them back or is it all gone?

I also want to get back all my programs without having to reinstall all of them, how can I do this?

Honestly, you can't. Your registry settings are gone and the only way to get them back is to reinstall programs. If you had repaired XP instead of installing another copy then you wouldn't be in this situation.
