I have posted my printer install problem here.

Printer Port problem

I think it is caused by some settings in XP somehow related to TCP/IP security which prevents my printer install program from completing or from manually create a TCP/IP port for my network printer.

As some of you might already be aware that Nvida Network Access (NAM) creates all kinds of problems so I removed it. I just wonder if some settings were modified so my install program and myself cannot creat a TCP/IP port.

Based on JackMDS in the networking forum there is nothig wrong with my router and printer. I absolutely agreed. Jack thinks and I oginally agreed that may be there something wrong with my NF4 chispet and the HP driver. I just hope that that it is just some settings in XP which is hurting me.

If you can shed any light on why an TCP/IP printer port cannot be created and fix it, that will really help.

Thanks again,

:(

Husky,

I always set up network printers like this manually. I've read through your other threads, so try this:

1) Open your Add Printer Tool
2) Click Next at the Welcome screen
3) Choose LOCAL (not Network) printer on the next screen
4) Choose "Create a new port" at the port assignment screen
5) Choose "Standard TCP/IP Port" on the drop down of the same screen
6) Click Next on the TCP/IP port Wizard
7) Type in the address you manually assigned (or whatever DHCP has assigned to it) to the printer next to "Printer Name or IP Address"... I believe you said that was 192.168.2.25. Let the port name default and hit Next.
8) Accept the default "Generic Network Card" on the next screen and hit Next.
9) Click on Finish to close the Port Wizard.
10) Now, at the Install Printer Software window, choose your printer driver by finding HP and 2600N, or use "Have Disk" and manually point it to the driver.
11) Accept the rest of the defaults and try printing a test page.

Good Luck!

Hi Metron,

I really appreciate your reply.

I did exactly according to your specified steps and at step 7 that when I experienced a crash. Had I been able to complete 7 and went to 8 then I would have been home free.

In addition, using the HP Network Printer Wizard Install I had the same problem. Same problem with the new HP 2600N printer driver.

Same result if I manually enter the IP address or the one doled out by DHCP.

There must be a simple registry lock somewhere which prevent me from creating a new TCP/IP port.

If you know of any registry lock on the TCP/IP port please let me know!!!

I agree with wpshooter... or possibly you have some virus or spyware infecting the TCP/IP stack.

Are you running an anti-virus like McAfee or Symantec?
Are you running the free Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta??
Are you running the free Spybot Search & Destroy?
Are you running the free (for personal use) Ad-Aware SE 1.06 from Lavasoft?
Are you running the free trial of SpySweeper from Webroot?

Install all of those, run the scans and remove EVERYTHING they find, and let me know...

I also commend you to this excellent thread from Schadenfroh...

One think that you can try is to run WINSOCKFIX, as the post suggested.
Metron, you are absolutly correct, that is an excellent post by those guys. I just went through them (the reccomendations), even though I normally do what they said, I copy and paste the link for future references.

Metron,

1. Avast antivirus every week and real time antivirus control. Nothig found
2. MS AntiSpyware beta and spyblaster. Nothing found.
3. Search and Destroy 1.4. Nothing found
4.Adware SE. Nothing found.

I only go to maintream sites and run all the above programs regularly so I think (may be wrongly) that I am safe.

I also have Norton and McAfee antivirus programs 2005-6 version but don't like them because they are resources hogs.

I agree that the link to Schadenfroh is excellent.

wpshooter,

I did not remove and reinsall TCP/IP. My internet connection to the ethernet card is working fine and I have no trouble with internet browsing or downloading. I installed another NIC card and that is working also, so there is nothing wrong with the ethernet connection.

I have the newest Nvidia ethernet drivers.

I will do it tomorrow, I am at my laptop at the moment. Had no problem installing and creating tcp/ip port at the centrino laptop.

Some times ago I installed Tor and Privoxy and removed them. Wonder if that messed up my system. Tor and Privoxy are supposed to hide your IP over the internet. I also installed and removed Nvidia Access Manager (NAM). The Nvidia firewall was removed withDriver Cleaner Pro so I am fairly sure that everything was removed.

Thank you all again from a real hapless guy,

:(

OK, update.

Since this morning I have been trying some of the fixes and diagnostics suggested.

1. Uninstalled HP USB driver first.

2. Very strange since I have not done this for some time, no option to uninstall TCP/IP, either in Adding or removing Windows components of in Network Connection Protocol. Gray out.

3. Installed TCP/IP version 6, did not do anything. Installed peer to peer network, Nothing.

4.Download Spydoctor for scanning. Found a few cookies. Removed them.

5. Installed HP drivers and HP Network Printer Install Wizard. Crash at the same place.

6. HP Toolbox did not detect any printer with ethernet wired. With USB, worked perfectly.

Total failures.

Husky,

Frustrating, but you have to keep trying until you solve it.

How about Winsockfix? Sounds like you don't have a spyware problem.

I'm not familiar with Tor and Privoxy... I'm assuming you did a normal uninstall. It's possible they corrupted something, and you may ultimately have to just re-install Windows XP (save that for a last resort).

Have you tried doing an XP System Restore from Safe Mode? XP does checkpoints at regular intervals, and whenever you install something.... so you can "reset" all of your config files back to the point in time. Question is... do you remember WHEN you didn't have this IP problem?

The only other thing I can think of to try: make sure your BIOS is up to date for your MOBO. It's remotely possible you could have a low level driver issue there. Check your vendor website for updates, read the release notes, see if any updates are related to TCP/IP fixes. Be very careful doing a BIOS update though!

Metron,

"Life is beautiful", I admire you for having that quote in your signature!!! :)

Actually, when I built this system just recently, I was pretty happy with it. OC was great, AMD Venice performs beyond expectation, (first time AMD owner after an Intel lifetime). I did not experience any problem until, as a glutton starving for punishment I installed Nvidia 6.66 upgrade. First time experienced with BSODs. I was able to resolve the drivers problems by using system restore based on the large number of other users who had problems with Nvidia 6.66.

I just bought this HP Color Laserjet 2600N a couple weeks ago, that's when I found out that I have a TCP/IP port problem when I was unable to install the network printer driver. As I mentioned before I had no problem with my XP-SP2 Pro Centrino Laptop through the wireless router. I honestly do not know when I ever had this TCP/IP port problem.

Windows reinstall is a very last resort for me, since I am not particularly knowledgeable about their activation process and do not want to shell out another hundred bucks or more for the privilege of using windows. My existing windows was activated and I am not sure how to go through that process again.

Frankly my problem is a very small problem, since USB driver works fine on the AMD-Nvidia Laptop.

I am an engineer by training and by trade so I am kind of obsessed by the small details.

Yes, life is beautiful and I am very fortunate to be where I am.

I am certain that I do not have malware or spyware or virus problem. What I do have is a mystery block in windows which prevent the printer from being recognized when connect through the ethernet.

MOOT,

JackMDS who is kind of a networking guru from the networking forum does not think that router or printer have anything to do with my problem since the laptop has no such problem yet connected through the same network. I did disable the Windows Firewall and that did not do anything for me, I also open port 9100 in the firewall and disable the router firewall for the hell of it. Nothing.

Well, there will be better days!!!

:)
