WinXP + Dell = No IP Address

I was hired to network 3 computers today in an office. The comps are all Dell GX240's with a standard 5 port hub. Well, I got 2 of the computes working really easily. They hooked right up, got an IP, and used the cable modem for the internet Very easy

So I moved on to the 3rd. Well, I hooked it all up, ran the network setup wizard, and nothing. No ip adress and no connectoin to the network. I tried everything I could, reinstaled XP, reinstaled drivers, updated drivers, moved to a different hub, direct connect to modem, ping 127.0.0.1 I got packets back from that, but I can never get an IP address.

The status box says I am recieving packets. Anyone have any ideas? I was just thinkin about dropping a 3rd party card in and tryin that.

Well your problem is the ISP is only allowing 2 IPs to be leased to you...thats why you cant get the third one...I would suggest to you to buy a cheap router and set them up behind it...good luck

Thanks guys. I got it working. I setup ICS and manually assigned all IPs. Works good, except the hub is only 10Mbps. Oh well.

a 100mbps hub isnt much more, find your clients a deal, maybe knock off a bit for it, they will "percieve value" and maybe you'll get some mo' cash .. heh well just my thoughts ..

Of course you could go for a cheap 8 port 10/100 switch with router and not be tied to that computer's uptime for your internet access...

I agree with FUBAR...you should never rely on ICS on another worstation for an internet connection...the routers are sooo cheap these days that is the way to go in a business situation
