Thanks in advance for any and all help
Got a laptop from a friend who happened to be hit with the winxp defender virus. it has diabled any and all antivirus antispyware etc... in safe mode did an uninstall reinstall for spybot with no avail. can't find the 2.5 to 3.5 adapter to simply connect to my computer to use my antivirus. cant find a decent bootable antivirus. any suggestions

How old is the laptop? If it is 2-3 years old or newer then it almost certainly has a SATA hard drive that can be directly connected to your system.
 
Download the HijackThis executable file from this page, rename the executable file to a random name, and run it on that system while you're in Safe Mode. Then post the logfile text here for help determining what to nuke.
 
HiJack this is a good idea. But first, try MalwareBytes from here

if you have A/V on another machine, many of them will let you create a bootable Rescue disk that has a scanner on it. That might help
 
So using Avast was able to delete the virus (hopefully) had 11 infected files. Some of which were in windows folders, but the computer is up and running and am installing avg. will be adding zone labs firewall (i think i had these two programs installed at one time but there is no trace of them. hmmm...) anyways thank god. this computer is taking up way too much of my time
Appreciate any and all input. It was driving me nuts I even tried the Bart PE disc to no avail. So thanks to all hopefully i can get this delivered in the next hour.

SATA is SATA. It doesn't matter if it is 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch the SATA connectors are the same.

PATA the 2.5 inch drive is 44 pins where the PATA 3.5 inch drive has 40 pins.

OP, glad you got your problem sorted.
 
ok my bad it was an ide sorry was pretty stressed out when this was going on. ended up taking about 12 hours all together over the weekend which killed my weekend. was charging but didn't expect it to be so long. figured if i had my 2.5 to 3.5 IDE adapter all would take about 3 hours. since i didn't ended up having to finagle control over the laptop to be able to install anything. even after i regained control with avast it took a 5 hour scan with avg and then 3 scans with spybot s&d at about an hour each and a ccleaner which took a half hour. she only had 580 mb left on a 40 gig hard drive. it was not fun. again i apologize for my blunder.
edit> oh pata????? oh hell if you look at my latest post you will see where i referenced my lack of knowledge with hard drives. always thought they were ide and sata
