I get these ads now when the heck ever. They aren't even IE windows, they are their own little message windows and the are really getting annoying. Half the time the ad is an ad for getting software to stop these popups! Its stupid. I thought the problem was with Windows Messenger, but I thought that I stopped it from running like they showed on the FAQ here. How can I stop these annoying poops?

Go download AdAware 6, update your definitions file, and scan your computer for spyware. Believe me, this program is good to run on a semi-regular basis. Just make sure you update the spyware definitions (it's very easy to do) each time you run it since they flag new ones almost every day.
BTW, AdAware is free for personal use. Spyboy search and destroy is another good free one.

But that doesnt solve the root of the problem, you need to install some good firewall software or a hardware firewall. The reason that you were able to get these messages in the first place is because services on your computer are directly accessable to the outside world, this is a very dangerous way to operate and a good way to get your machine attacked by an internet worm, hacked into, or worse.
If you are running Windows XP use the built-in firewall, if you are using another OS either go buy one or use one of the decent free ones like Zone Alarm.

No these messages are not from MSN Messenger, these messages are from the Windows Messenger Service.
The Windows Messenger Service is a Windows service that allows network clients to recieve network broadcasts and are (generally) designed to work on a local network, however anyone who does not run a firewall makes the world their "local network" and can recieve these "popup" messages.

He did mention that he have tried the FAQ on shutdown/disable Messenger in services therefore I thought it could be some residential software that he got from "free/ad" software. And, I did mention checking on the process to see what were runing so he could shut it down.

Did you go and get yourself a good firewall? Just disabling the service leaves everything else as wide open as the messenger service.

what else do you thionk he needs a firewall for? if messenger if off, his problem is solved. most people dont need firewalls. just need to know how to setup their system correctly.

Shutting down your messenger service also kills it for any of your applications that use it. From what I've read, a firewall is the best option.

I disagree, anyone running a Windows PC with an internet connection should be running a firewall. Even if you are very good with Windows networking (and you arent running any applications) it's very hard to ensure you are completely closed to the outside world.
I suggest you read this (click on "fast scan" at the top for a quick security scan of your system).

It is nice to have a firewall, but it is not a must have.
Turn on & off your computer for the duration that you uses will prevent hacker that try to log into your computer because it take time to scan & exploit unless you accidentally install a trojan. Another method is unplug your network cable when you are not on the net. Firewall don't do much if you have a trojan, because most leave the out going services open and close most incoming. And firewall can be attack because they are vunerable to DOS & buffer overflow if you don't keep up with the updates.
However, a firewall is a good idea if you leave your computer/server running & open to the net 24/7.
