i have this file in 2 machines called hiberfil.sys, located in C:\ i believe its a memory dump type file but uncertain, wont defrag and its 511mbs or perhaps 2 511mbs files on one puter & 130mbs on another. i have sys restore turned off. Can i reclaim this disc space or are these files permanent wasted space.
Thanks for the help

i think that's the file where XP stores stuff when you hibernate the computer. It will probably get recreated every boot, but I"m not sure. you could try disabling hibernation in the power management control panel.

to hibernate: start->shutdown, press shift. the standby button turns into a hibernate button

Thanx but no good thats been turned off awhile, to make this even more odd one p3 puter doesnt have this file at all? Which makes me think its not needed, size corresponds close with sys physical ram though?

Hibernation is really only any use on a laptop.
Hiberfil.sys is where the OS dumps the contents of RAM when you hibernate a computer, the goal being that upon awaken, the system is restored to the exact point that you hibernated at.

You can turn off Hibernation in the control panel, under power settings/options.

Once you disable hibernation and reboot, the file should disappear. If it doesnt, just erase it.

You hit everything right on, but I'll disagree with this comment. I use hibernation on all of my machines when I leave for more than a day or so (no sense running the ps for suspend mode if I don't have to). But, as with everything, some will find it usefull on desktops, some will not.
