winXP can't detect WDC 13GB HDD on hpt366 controller

i'm on:
ABIT BE6, p3-500, 392MB pc100 viking ram... very old sys but still runs... however, lately for the past week--i think my primarily controller gave out, or a bad ibm 60.0gb 75gxp hdd (thank god for the warranty). anyways, i put in an old seagate 8gb hdd just to access inet and do daily work w/ office. however, after installing xp (from a lot of tries), it doesn't load as fast as it used to anymore. i'm talking bout the default XP loading screen... it takes about 30 min.-1 hour plus sometimes... but the system runs fine after that when i login.

anyone know what the cause of this problem can be?...

-controller?
-ide cable?
-bad mobo?

thanks in advance.

XP is a system hog. It sounds about right on a P3 500 and old HDD. Not much you can do to make XP load up faster except a new PC.

it is because ATA/66 is disabled by default on XP. not sure how to enable it, but Tweak-XP will enable it for you.

<--- winxp newb coming from 2 years of w2k

edit: also tweak-xp will significatly reduce boot times.
